Kiss My Ass, Yankees Fans

You think you're classy? You think you root for the classiest team in baseball? Screw you!

These are not the words of a bitter Red Sox fan. You won, we lost, we know, we'll get over it. These are the words of a sports fan who knows hypocrisy when he sees it. Your classy team is selling this classy t-shirt on their own website:

Classy? I don't think so. This is filth. This is downright repulsive; your team's management is sanctioning an anti-Red Sox shirt with a gravestone on it when one of our players has cancer. Really classy.

Go to the any other major league team's shop. No, really, I insist. I dare you to find any piece of clothing that trash-talks another team, let alone uses their logo. You can't find it, because it doesn't exist.

I don't mind when Joe Schmo is out at a cart under the 4 train selling a "Fuck Boston" t-shirt, but it's another thing when it's endorsed by the team.

Don't let me ever hear you call your team classy again. Ever. Unless the Yankees apologize for putting this atrocity on their website, burn the t-shirts they have in stock, and put all the proceeds they've collected towards cancer research, you have no right to ever claim the high road again.

You made your point in one sentence. The rest seemed like it came from a kid who just lost a game on Sega Genesis.

This is less an indictment of sore winning and more evidence of sore losing. Get over yourselves, Sawx fans, you had two years to gloat, and you guys took EVERY shot you could muster up. Now it's our turn again, just like it was from the 1920s through 2004.

Enjoy the postseason, fellas.

"And what's the deal with cancer?"
"Hey, I have cancer!"

the shirt looks like it's designed for a pro wrestler or something- those sleeves are huge.

besides, classy doesn't win championships. talent and a bit of luck does.

i am right there with you ev- as a die hard sox fan, i get super upset about this, especially with a bunch of the lineup out in august and septemeber for not just injuries but illnesses, some of which are life threatening. it makes me chuckle when i see a guy on yawkey way selling "brokeback jeter" shirts, but they are not endorsed by the team. and they represent poor sportsmanship. and i think the current yankee team embodies exactly that: poor sportsman and poor sportsmanship.

ace cowboy: We took every shot we could muster, but it wasn't sanctioned BY THE RED SOX ORGANIZATION. That's the difference here, and that's all I'm talking about.

anon 1: I've lived through the 2003 ALCS in New York. Believe me, I KNOW how to play with the big boys.

anon 2: Like a typical Yankee fan, I see that you totally ignored the point of my argument to take a shot at how much the Red Sox suck.

I wouldn't bother arguing EVI. Arguing with Yankees fans is like arguing with Republicans. They bathe themselves in hypocrisy, talk utter shit, only come out of the woodwork when the going is good and come out with such utter nonsense that it is almost impossible to argue against them.

As for Sox fans just bitching due to sour grapes, I don't know if you Yankees fans have noticed (probably not since most of you pay no attention to your team or to baseball in general until late September), but ALL baseball fans hate you, not just Red Sox fans. People who are genuine sports fans despise the sort of fanbase who show up during winning streaks and disappear during losing streaks. There are plenty of decent Yankees fans who know their baseball and are always there for their team - sadly they are usually drowned out by the idiots who have no fucking clue what's going on, but suddenly become lifelong, die-hard fans every time October rolls around.

It's not sour grapes, we're not devastated that you made the playoffs and we didn't (though we're certainly not excited about it). We just think you're fucking idiots.

I think I hate Yankees fans and Sox fans quite equally. That being said, shut up. You're whining. Were the tables turned (despite what you say about team sanctioning), you wouldn't even consider being in such an uproar. I say this after years of having level-headed debates with you and also after hearing you spew years of Yankee-hating vitriol.

I had to look and see if this was for real. Although I am a Yankees fan, the shirt is in poor taste, a little. I did laugh my ass off when I saw it though. The funniest part? The shirt is on backorder for 2-4 weeks.

stop whining! you make it sound like the yankee organization is waging a personal attack on you. neither the yankees nor the red sox care about your feelings. it's just a game.

I think most EVERYONE here has missed the point... so here is an outsider's view.

I'm neiter a Yankees or Red Sox fan. I'm a Phillies fan (which is a-whole-nother debate.) I'm also an Eagles fan and a Flyers fan. And if anyone knows anything about Philadelphia sports fans... it's the fact that we are VERY fucking devoted. We downright hate our competition. You will not find one Eagles fan that likes the Dallas Cowboys, you will not find one Flyers fan that likes the New Jersey Devils. I've seen people in the Philadelphia area wearing "FUCK DALLAS" shirts and "TO MUST DIE!" shirts, and get a chuckle... I'll admit that. That's how Philly sports fans are bred. But NONE of these shirts were ordered and printed by the Philadelphia Sports teams. The Eagles didn't rush to press a TO Suicide Shirt. The Flyers haven't made "DEVILS SUCK!" shirts. Outside entrepreneurs have.. and good for them for making a buck.

The fact that the YANKEES ORGINIZATION had these shirts produced shows a total lack of class. It's unsportsmanlike to piss upon your opponent like such. Excessive celebration and unsportsmanlike conduct are penalties in the NFL... so why is something so unsportsmanlike tolerated in the MLB?

To all the Yankees fans that came here just to bash Chris, get off your fucking high horse. He's not complaining that the Yankees are in the playoffs and the Red Sox aren't. He's not whining about the Yankees not being a better team or anything like that. He's complaining about a lack of judgement from the orginaztion, and it's tolerance by the league.

ps- since everyone else is team bashing... i'll get mine off my chest.

Atlanta Braves Suck.
Toronto Blue Jays Suck.
New York Mets Suck.
New York Yankees Suck.
Dallas Cowboys Suck.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Suck.
Carolina Panthers Suck.
New York Giants Suck.
Washington Redskins Suck.
New England Patriots Suck (Sorry Chris).
New Jersey Devils Suck.
New York Rangers Suck.
Ottawa Senators Suck.
Buffalo Sabers Suck.
Tampa Bay Lightning Suck.
Detroit Red Wings Suck.
LA Lakers suck.

PS - something Chris forgot to mention in his piece was that, quite the opposite of sanctioning T-Shirts like the this, the Red Sox brass have decreed that no-one wearing anti-Yankees clothing of any description will be allowed into Fenway. If the guys on the gates see you in a Yankees Suck T-Shirt or anything like that, they won't let you in. Do the Yanks have a reciprocal policy? Of course not!

Quit your bitching! God forbid you make a rational complaint on your own blog. WTF were you thinking?

Oh right- you were thinking that douchebags belong in the feminine care section and this ain't it. If you disagree that the shirt is in poor taste for a MLB team to sanction, you're out of your fucking mind.

I have a funny pic, though, Chris. It's a pic of the NYY t-shirt which celebrates their back-to-back AL pennants in 03 and 04. Seriously.

Hey I saw a link to this post on another site, so I thought I'd add my 2 cents as you're all missing a key point.

I think you guys are failing to realize that the Red Sox organization has as much to do with this t-shirt as the Yankees, which in the end is probably little to no involvement on an organizational level.

If you notice on the back of that shirt, you see the copyrighted Red Sox logo. Last time I checked, you can't use a logo without the express written consent of the organization, usually done in the form of a contract. The manufacturer of the shirt likely pays a licensing fee to MLB for the use of the logos. Those fees are then dispersed to the 30 MLB organizations via revenue sharing, so every organization, including the Boston Red Sox are profiting from the sale of this t-shirt.

Now let's say that the Yankees gave approval for the use of their logo on the shirt. You legally could not use the Red Sox logo without the permission of the Red Sox. Your beloved Red Sox would be just as guilty of allowing this shirt as the Yankees or MLB. In all likelihood, the Yankees and the Red Sox have absolutely nothing to do with the creation of this t-shirt. But if they do, I don't believe you can have one's approval without the other. Bashing just the Yankees on this is nothing short of hypocritical.

It's simple business. If you honestly think that the Sox have no part in this or aren't profiting from it, go take a business class or two.

It's not the Yankees that sanctioned this shirt, it's Major League Baseball and the 30 teams it represents, including the Boston Red Sox. MLB and the teams are profiting from another part of the Yanks/Sox rivalry, plain and simple.

You're missing another key point: this t-shirt was sold at Yankee Stadium during the ALDS. That was completely a decision on the organizational level of the New York Yankees.

Therefore, my argument still stands.

Actually, sports teams licence their logo to merchandising companies on a general basis ie; give us this much money and you can put our logo on stuff; retaining creative input on the level of "hey, that shirt sucks/makes us look bad, quit selling it now" whenever neccessary. It's entirely possible for this shirt to have been designed and manufactured without direct approval from anyone in Red Sox management.

It's also worth pointing out that even if it was approved, allowing it to be sold with a "if they want to show no class, let them" attitude and taking a non-intrusive stance is on a vastly different moral plane from the guy who initially has the idea to print shirts poking fun at cancer patients.
