Mapping Murder

On Friday, the New York Times created this Google Maps Mashup of all the homicides committed in New York in 2005.

This is a screenshot of their mashup of murders in the Bronx alone in 2005, all 129 of them. They even gave special distinction to multiple homicides.

The Times went a step further on Sunday and analyzed the stigma of buying property that was the site of a murder. Real classy!

Of course, the Times was not the first newspaper to map murders in their market. The Toronto Star did the same thing. Plotting a mind-boggling 78 murders in their entire city in 2005. Crime is on the rise in Toronto, but take a look at how stark the map still looks in comparison to New York's.
