Boozin' at... Professor Thom's

Welcome to my new favorite bar. Professor Thom's (219 2nd Ave. between 13th and 14th Sts.) is officially my new neighborhood haunt. After just one visit, in fact. For one thing, it's a great bar to watch a ballgame - they have six plasma screens and a large projection screen. The beer selection is nice and varied - Rogue, Harpoon, Magic Hat, Bell's, plus the usual suspects. The decor is pretty standard - nice wood accents, comfortable seating at the bar or in booths. The happy hour specials are great, too - $3 drafts and $4 wine and well drinks from 4-8. There's food, too - wings and burgers are the top picks, and they often run 25 cent wing specials.

BUT what puts this bar over the top is its clientele: Boston Red Sox fans. The founders of Professor Thom's helped convince the tired West Village haunt Riviera to become the official Red Sox bar of New York (it's been featured in the New England media often ignoring other New York/Red Sox hot spots). NESN is always on (nice to see T.C. and Eck doing the unnecessarily-titled "Granite City Electric Extra Innings Extra"), and the bar is full of passionate Red Sox fans, alongside sympathetic Mets fans.

And to top it all off, it's a block from my apartment. So when the Sox lose to the Yankees, I'll have a very short walk of shame.

(Just south of the intersection of 2nd Ave. and 14th St., on west side of 2nd Ave.)
